Central New York State Under Water

Our Prayers go out to the families in Central NY who are battling with the flooding conditions as we speak.
With heavy downpours still in the forecast there is no relief in site.
Thanks to friends back in New York via Facebook, here are current pictures to show what is happening.

Daily Prompt: Citizen of Today

Daily Prompt: 21st Century Citizen

Do you belong in this day and age?
Do you feel comfortable being a citizen of the 21st-century?
If you do, explain why —
and if you don’t,
when in human history would you rather be?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us MODERN.

Let’s get real here for a second… there is not an era that has gone by that has not had it’s trials and tribulations.
With that being said, living for today and making a difference in todays society might just have an impact on tomorrow.

  • Being kind to a stranger (even a smile or kind word)
  • Being a foster parent to stray animals
  • Being a helping hand in your community
  • Teaching a class for just the cost of supplies in your community
  • Having a get to know you party in your neighborhood

Our neighbors got to know us when we went around with cameras and video equiptment and loved the video we made…

It did not cost us anything and did not hurt the environment at all…gave a smile to 28,135 people so far…

It was a way for me to get to know my neighbors and they got to know me as the lady from NY with the camera lol…

What have you done in this century to make an impact?

Would love to hear…

Daily Prompt: A Life In Review

Daily Prompt: Four Stars

Write a review of your life — or the life of someone close to you — as if it were a movie or a book.

Photographers, artists, poets: show us LIFE.

540309_394119673963962_1544795604_n

Our story opens in a small town outside of Buffalo NY.  It is hard times.  Life is not easy in the 50’s,  a couple with seven children.

Working in the Bethlehem Steel Mill is the job that is available.  It is a hard dirty job.  Luckily it is a job and puts food on the table.

As the family grows so do the bonds between each of the family members.

Being the baby of the family, at eighteen he goes off to war to do three tours.  He meets a gal from New York State and starts a family of his own.

They go through good times and bad times.  The children grow up and start families of their own.

He becomes divorced.

He is a unique person.  Some days in a world of his own.  He decides to become married again and start a different life.

Some of the old life still creeps in and haunts him.

He tries hard to cope with it from day to day.

Just like his gnome…he travels through life with each day being a new adventure.  Coping with the past, yet looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

This is Eman, my hubby.  A life in review.  So many pages undisclosed.  A mystery to my readers.  A must see the movie or read the book to get the juicy details.

Enjoy.

Daily Prompt: Hubby & The Telemarketer

Daily Prompt: Unknown Caller

You receive a call from someone an unexpected person. Who is it, and what is the conversation about? Go!

035

You might say my hubby is a bit of a clown.  Since he is hard of hearing, that only makes the situation a little funnier sometimes.  This prompt actually brought two telephone calls to mind for me.  One was a telemarketer who has put us on the do not call list now on her end, not that we asked btw she insisted after speaking with him.

She was a Diabetic Supply Telemarketer who called to tell us that we had a free sample of Diabetic Supplies coming in the mail.  She needed our address of where to send them.

In his best Spanish accent he proceeded to tell her “Yes this is Emmanuel”.  “Oh, You are so wonderful.  My family in Mexico is in such need of this.  They will be so grateful.  Can you send 300 samples right away to VOVOVOVOdlddld Mexico?”
He gave an actual address that I have blocked out here that he had found on Google while talking to her.
She insisted that there was only one sample per family and he continued to tell her that he was hard of hearing and that his family was in dire need of the medical supplies.
This conversation continued for 45 minutes.
I lost track of how many times I begged him to stop.

Story two:

This one I made a video of.

To give some background on these three videos, my hubby is a junk food addict.  One of his favorites is Funyuns.  His brother in Lackawanna NY decided to get into this prank after seeing my post on You Tube so there is his answer here also.

Grab a cup of your favorite brew and enjoy.

I guess you could say it runs in the family.

Have a great day and try not to prank a telemarketer or call about your favorite snack today or people might say “You have too much time on your hands”

Daily Prompt: Turning of the Seasons

Daily Prompt: Turn, Turn, Turn

For many of us, winter is blooming into spring, or fall hardening into winter. Which season do you most look forward to?

Yes She’s a Yankee from New York and I’m a Rebel from Tennessee.

My hubby loves the Spring time with all of the blossoms starting to come out and the beautiful flowers that are starting to bloom in our yard.

I on the other hand love the Summers here in Tennessee.  They are so awesome.  He says they are too warm.  After living in cold and wet New York, I love them.

What is your favorite Season?  Would love to hear from you…

Today is going to be in the 70’s.  My windows are open and the breeze is wonderful.  I am already loving it.  It is wonderful.  It gives me a fresh sense of energy.

Except for the grass clippings there is less pollen that is why I love the Summer more than Spring…The Spring Pollen is tough for me.  Beautiful, but tough for allergies.

Daily Prompt: Idyllic Community

Daily Prompt: Idyllic

What does your ideal community look like? How is it organized, and how is community life structured? What values does the community share?

I must sound like a broken record on this one.  Were we are located gives us a touch of the country while being right next to Clarksville, Tennessee and Ft. Campbell, Kentucky so we have the best of both worlds.  Till I woke up this morning.

We have snow…what is this?  It is New York State weather.  Not normal Tennessee weather.  I borrowed these pictures from a friend who took them last night and this morning.

We are not supposed to have hail dropping on our daffodils.

What is up with snow?  Yes I know we can still see the ground but the black ice is incredible.

While Clarksville and Woodlawn area offer all the schools, hospital and shopping that one needs, not to mention places to eat and visit…oops I just did lol.

Ft. Campbell is a city within itself.  It has it’s own schools, hospital, shopping, restaurants and things to do.

The community where we are is small and quiet.  When our dog Trina was frightened and ran away for a day, the community came out to help find her.  People actually stopped to ask if we were looking for a child.

She came home just as it got dark (she is afraid of the dark and was hungry.  First thing she did was check her New Box of Milkbones to make sure they were still there.

What is your perfect community?  Do you live in it now?  Would love to hear…

Daily Prompt: Places for me is the country life

Daily Prompt: Places

by michelle w. on March 2, 2013

Beach, mountain, forest, or somewhere else entirely?

Since this prompt was so vague I am not sure exactly what Michelle had in mind, I took it that we were to chose which was our favorite spots.  The beach is nice to visit however, due to the fear of hurricanes, I would not want to live near one.  The mountains are wonderful, as I used to live in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State.  The snow was very deep and it never got very warm.  To me the Mountains and the Forest go hand in hand.  At least there they did.

I am loving the country life.  We do not have cows, or any farm animals nor do our neighbors.  We are located outside of the city and love it.  We have several acres of land where our animals can play.  Although they are all in the warm house today due to the snow falling.  Even my animals from New York now love the warmer weather here and prefer nicer days rather than playing in the snow like they used to.

If my hubby was not afraid of getting on a plane he would love to go to Spain.  I would love to go to Italy, Costa Rica  and Australia.  We both would love to go visit his daughter in Germany while they are there…that is not going to happen though lol…  I would be happy if we just flew to New York to visit both of our families.

What is your favorite place to be?  Please share with me…would love to hear…

Thank you for reading

Sugary Substance Ban in NYC – What is Next?

bucket2

It is rare to find a can of soda pop in our home so this came as a surprise for me to read that a Mayor would take such a drastic step in his city to try and control the obesity.  There are very few of the diet soda’s that I can consume due to my corn allergy.  I do drink a ton of coffee, however when we go out to eat which is rare, a diet soda is what I will order if they do not have sweet tea.   Will coffee be next on the hit list?

As New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on soft drinks larger than 16 ounces gets set to take effect later this month, Gotham residents are deeply divided over the controversial initiative.

Soft Drink Ban: New Yorkers Deeply Divided As Bloomberg's 16-Ounce Soda Ban Set To Take Effect

Photo: ReutersAs New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on soft drinks larger than 16 ounces is set to take effect later this month, Gotham residents are deeply divided over the controversial initiative.

A little more than 50 percent of New Yorkers oppose the ban while 46 percent support it, according to a new poll released Thursday by Quinnipiac University.

Under the mayor’s plan, which goes into effect March 12, soft drinks larger than 16 ounces cannot be sold in restaurants, movie theaters and other places regulated by the city’s health department.

Bloomberg, a lame-duck mayor who is nearing the end of his third and final term, has unveiled initiatives aimed at making New Yorkers healthier throughout his tenure, including banning smoking indoors, doing away with trans fats and urging restaurants to cut back on salt. The mayor’s other health-conscious proposals have been warmly received.

While the mayor doesn’t have to worry about the next election, those vying to replace him would be wise to side against the soft drink ban, according to the poll.

The Quinnipiac survey found 29 percent of voters are less likely “to vote for a candidate who backs the drink ban,” while 21 percent said a candidate’s stance on the controversial policy won’t factor into their voting decision.

The survey found New Yorkers were divided as a whole, but Republican voters and black New Yorkers — two groups with generally very little overlap — largely oppose the ban. The poll showed 65 percent of registered Republicans don’t like the ban while 33 percent support it. A majority of Democrats – 52 percent – support the ban, compared to 46 percent who don’t.

While whites and Hispanics were roughly split on the ban, black New Yorkers are largely against the ban. Six in 10 blacks oppose the soft drink ban and 38 percent support it, according to the poll.

The survey also showed that Bloomberg’s job approval rating still hovers above 50 percent, although his popularity has dipped since taking office in 2002.

“Mayor Bloomberg maintains his pretty-good-for-a-third-term job approval,” said Quinnipiac poll spokesman Mickey Carroll.  “No more of those 70 percent numbers that were routine in his second term. But, as his tenure winds down, we still like him.”

The poll’s respondents were also asked whom they think did the best job as New York City mayor. Bloomberg ranked third at 24 percent. He was followed by late Mayor Ed Koch (25 percent) and Rudy Giuliani (31 percent.)

New York soda ban could be the end for children’s pizza parties and mixers for bottle service as Mayor mandates no soft drinks can be sold over 16oz

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

PUBLISHED: 16:57 EST, 24 February 2013 | UPDATED: 17:55 EST, 24 February 2013
Next month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on sodas and sugary drinks larger than 16oz will kick in for all bars, restaurants, cafes and delis in the city.

The new law could have the unforeseen effect of killing pizza parties, children’s birthday parties and taking the fizz out of bottle service at high-class bars.

Family tradition: Pizzerias will be barred from delivering 2liter bottles of soda to families who order pizzasFamily tradition: Pizzerias will be barred from delivering 2liter bottles of soda to families who order pizzas

New Yorkers were furious to learn that the soda ban will prevent pizzerias from delivering 2-liter bottles of soda with pizzas – thus putting the kibosh on a time-honored family meal.

The New York Post points out that most pizza joints charge $3 for a two-liter. Six 12-oz cans – a roughly equivalent amount of soda – will cost $6 to $7.50.

‘It’s not fair. If you’re gonna tell me what to do, it’s no good,’ Steve DiMaggio, of Caruso’s in Brooklyn, told the newspaper. ‘It’s gonna cost a lot more.’

Representatives from city restaurants have been lobbying hard against the mayor’s new law and they say the ban on delivering 20 oz bottles with pizzas makes even less sense than the other provisions.

‘It’s ludicrous. It’s a sealed bottle of soda you can buy in the supermarket. Why can’t they deliver what you can get in the supermarket?’ Robert Bookman, a lawyer for the New York City Hospitality Alliance, asked.

Fun without the fizz: A 2liter bottle of soda costs $3 at most pizza joints - the same amount of soda in 12oz cans will cost $6 to $7.50Fun without the fizz: A 2liter bottle of soda costs $3 at most pizza joints – the same amount of soda in 12oz cans will cost $6 to $7.50

It’s not just pizza parties that would take a hit. Bowling alleys and other spots that serve soda in pitchers to large groups of kids are also going to have to change their tactics.

The ban applies to sodas and surgery teas and juice drinks. Diet sodas and 100percent juice are exempt.

The mixers available for customers who buy bottle service at high-class night clubs will also be restricted.

Currently, unlimited amounts of soda, cranberry juice, tonic water and other popular mixers are offered for anyone who pays for a bottle of liquor at clubs across the city.

The law counts all of those a sugary drinks – they can only be served in 16oz bottles – even though they are meant to serve several people and not just one.

Bloomberg says too much soda consumption is resulting in obesity problems – especially for low-income New Yorkers and children.

The ban aims to reduce the amount of soda that New Yorkers consume.

Daily Prompt: No Nightmares Here Anymore

Daily Prompt: Nightmares

by michelle w. on February 19, 2013

Describe the last nightmare you remember having. What do you think it meant?

As a child and into my teens I can recall having nightmares on a regular basis.  It was simply my subconscious reliving in vivid details.

When I became married, we settled into a nice home near a fire station.  During one of the first few nights we were there, a fire had occurred during the night and the siren had gone off to alert the local firemen.  My new husband shook me as he said that I was standing on the bed crying and shouting that we needed to find the local air raid shelter.

When he woke me, he asked me why I was carrying on so in my sleep.  I could still hear the alarm and the memories of grade school and having to do the air raid shelter runs were very vivid in my mind.

For those of you who are really young, yes we had to rehearse these drills like a fire drill in school twice a week.  We went under the school below the basement into air raid shelters.

This was the early sixties in Detroit Michigan.  This was a prime target for bombing as was any large city with major industry.  The car industry would certainly be no exception.

That is the last time that I can remember having a nightmare.

I have always been a light sleeper and awake to the slightest of noise in the home.  The light sleep began with the pregnancy of my first daughter and has continued through the rest of my life.  When motherhood kicked in the sound sleep walked away.

Now I sleep with a mask on which blocks any light from the room and I have found that a do get a more tranquil sleep.  I just dream of how I am going to rearrange the rooms in the house.  I know what is on my subconscious mind lol.

Now I ask my readers the same question:  “What was your last nightmare?” and “What do you think it meant?

Daily Prompt: Cupid’s Arrow

by michelle w. on February 14, 2013

It’s Valentine’s Day, so write an ode to someone or something you love. Bonus points for poetry!

If you had asked me ten years ago if I now would be wed,

My answer would have been simply “Are you sick in the head?”

Here I am now, almost four years married to a wonderful man.

Not even certain how the story quite began.

We were just friends, introduced by friends of each.

He in Tennessee, I in New York, what a huge reach.

With God’s hands in the plot,

Oh who would ever have thought.

One Thanksgiving weekend, both being alone,

Would be the start of our future and build our new home.

We joked and we laughed about getting together.

We were constantly watching the Winter Weather.

I boarded a plane to head to Tennessee.

Such a beautiful place, I was ever to see.

The entire weekend, we ate and we laughed.

The arrow had landed that would last and last.

It will be four years this coming June that I said “I do”..

To start a new life and bid adieu.

To a single life that I knew so well, where I did not date.

The thoughts of marriage or dating were not mine to debate.

To those who are single I have these few words to say.

Enjoy the life God has given you each and every day.

If you have faith for God to do His will to be done,

When God feels it is time, it will be the special one.

To those of you who are married, enjoy this special day.

Make your mate feel loved in a special way.

This morning my hubby came in to say “I love you” and looked at my hair.

I had just gotten up, it was quite a scare.

He told me he loved me, more than life itself.  Yet my hair looked like DC after the rain.

I laughed, told him I was about to shower, and I was not vain.

Life will be good for each day we start our marriage all over again.
