Daily Prompt: Five a Day

You’ve being exiled to a private island, and your captors will only supply you with five foods. What do you pick?

Here are five major food groups that can help you survive while awaiting rescue operations to find you:

1 – Meats and proteins must be priority on your list. There is no issue with spoiling since these foods are now canned. Make sure to check the expiration dates. The later the expiration dates, the better.

You can also store up on loads of beef jerky. Unlike other cold cuts, this does not require refrigeration and are vacuum sealed for longer shelf life. You can also store meat items that need to be cooked but be sure to cook it first before deciding on consuming the canned products. For these types of food that require cooking, you need to have a burner or any portable heating device.

2 – Energy bars, mixed nuts, beans and peanut butter are good sources of protein. Be sure to store some of these too.

3 – Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of carbohydrates and other vitamins and minerals that you will need for survival. Canned fruits such as peaches, oranges and pineapples are good fruit choices and have long shelf lives. You can also store dried fruits. Aside from the fact that it can be eaten alone, they have high carbohydrate content and can be kept for six to nine months.

4 – Whole grains such as crackers, bread sticks, rice and cereals are good choices for survival foods. You may also want to consider storing an amount of brown rice because of the extra fiber that it contains and the B vitamins that it supplies the body. Unfortunately it doesn’t last longer than white rice so if you’re looking for whole grains that have a variety of flavors, store granola bars.

5 – Water is the most essential fluid to have. Make sure that there’s enough supply of bottled water that you can drink. Each person shall have a gallon’s share of water per day in order to avoid shortage. Separate drinking water from water that will be used for cleaning and hygiene purposes. Aside from water, fruit juices, coffee, powdered milk and tea must also be stored. Other food items include candy bars, chewing gums, condiments specifically salt to preserve foods and pepper to add flavour to your main meals, honey and other types of sweeteners. These food types can help divert your palate from the usual taste that you might grow tired of while waiting to be found by rescue operations.

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing foods for your survival kit. Survival foods should be high in energy, easy to transport, require no refrigeration or cooking, and most importantly, provide necessary nutrients. Whether you’re packing survival foods for a hike, camping trip or your home emergency disaster kit, there are a few staples you should include.

Fats

One of the best ingredients for survival is fat. Fats are good for energy, and they also provide insulation under the skin from extreme temperatures. Fat provides needed energy — gram for gram, fat provides more energy than carbohydrates. Good portable sources of fat include sardines, peanut butter, nuts, dried coconut and certain food bars, such as Organic Raw Omega-3 food bar, which contains 13 grams of healthy fat.

Carbohydrates

The body gets energy from carbs by breaking them down into glucose to use for fuel. In most survival situations, you burn more calories and reach exhaustion faster than normal. Protein

Protein is a very important nutrient for survival, but not just protein, but complete proteins, which contain all the essential amino acids — the building blocks of protein. Quick and easy protein sources include canned tuna, dehydrated meats, nuts and pemmican, a dried, concentrated mixture of protein and fat.

Water and Electrolytes

Water is one of the most important ingredients for survival; you can go weeks without food, but only a day or so without water. But drinking plain water, especially in extreme temperatures in which you might perspire more, can cause an electrolyte imbalance. Symptoms of an imbalance or deficiency include drowsiness, weakness, nausea, confusion and disorientation. Electrolytes help minimize these symptoms and prevent muscle cramps. Gatorade is a common choice, but takes up space in your survival kit or backpack. However, electrolyte tablets are very compact and easy to transport.

Ok so I have been sitting here starving and reading blogs wondering what to make for a quick dinner and ugh … Omnomalicious just does me in …

Since I am not a fan of any type of Sausage…I am thinking Spinach since I bought 4 bags of fresh baby spinach on last trip to market… however, as I am getting ready to make it, hubby pops in, sees my ingredients and heads to freezer to return with MEAT, lol.. so here we go with pictures even… Ok then I purchase a different brand of lasagna that I will not mention that was other than Barilla and am totally disappointed so it is back to pantry and I am left with Manicotti or Jumbo Shells so we will see from here…what a day so far…

This was going to be an easy meal and now food is on hold like most planes that I ride that circle the airport for hours waiting to get permission to land..

Honestly I will not stray from this pasta company ever again…

Grandma Cattot always said that if you must cheat and can’t take time to make the pasta or machine is in repair shop then do the Barilla or make a veggie dish… now I know why. This will be the perfect gift if he wants fresh pasta …

So after boiling the pasta for eight minutes

and cooking the meat in the diced onion and fresh Italian Basil and Italian Parsley from my flower pot garden and a few tsp of minced garlic and olive oil in pan…

I chopped and added the cherry tomatoes to add on top of meat.

I have taken the ricotta cheese and whipped together with egg and garlic powder and a hint of Mediterranean herb and chilled while waiting.

Stuffing was easy for me as I used to sit at a tv tray on the porch swing every Saturday morning early and stuff cannoli with a spoon and a bowl then place on a lined cookie sheet. I never knew a pastry bag existed till I was well into married life lol…

350 oven F for about 25 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbling sauce.

I used fresh spinach for mine and steamed in my Tupperware Steamer for 7 minutes on power of 7 since we have a 1200 watt microwave.

Cover and then get on with cooking

Unlike frozen spinach, this is ready to use…

Just stir in desired quantity and it chops it nicely while stirring it.  I also added a bit of Mediterranean Herb and garlic powder while stirring.

I stuffed, covered with a layer of the ricotta cheese then sauce and a sprinkle of Parmesan Cheese then when finished baking added a hint of spinach on top of pan to remind hubby that this pan was spinach dish.
