Writing 101, Day Eight: Cash and Carry Barn is a great find

writing-101-june-2014-class-badge-2

Go to a local café, park, or public place and report on what you see. Get detailed: leave no nuance behind.

To drive past The Cash and Carry Barn which is located at 951 Lafayette Rd, Clarksville, TN 37042 it looks like a monument store.  If you have kept driving you have missed out on a huge treat.  They are so much more. (931) 503-9921 is their number to call.

Rather than skip the adverbs I had a better idea.  Show you.  Since they are open year round they have lots of pictures on their Facebook page.

Saturday Mornings there means fresh baked goods:

Then there is the homemade salsa, pickles, relishes, various apple butters, pie fillings and fresh baked pies.

Did I mention the fresh vegetables.  They are open year round.  They have a great green house.

Yes they work hard at the monuments.  Behind the scenes there is so much more… Go and see it for yourself when you are in the area.  Tell them that Tammye and Emmanuel sent you.

Daily Prompt: Dear Telephone Solicitor

A word of advice to any poor soul who works as a telephone solicitor.
Speaking English is a plus.
Non English is tolerable if I can understand what you are trying to say. phone

http://www.easychoice.com/ tried to call three times today.
The background noise from other solicitors doing the same thing from other telephones was so bad that I could not hear the broken English of the person on the phone trying to reach me.  I realize that they are trying to make a living.  So am I.  I do not call everyone to try and make a sale.  My hubby gets up early in the morning and starts to advertise all over in free spots.  We do well with our businesses without annoying people with telephone calls.
creative thought1

I am suggesting this book to you so go to http://www.amazon.com and take a coffee break or a lunch break and read it.

cup of coffee

You might get some creative ideas on how to find a new way of making money without annoying people with caller id.

Then a local restaurant mysteriously found our business card in their fishbowl…two free tickets to dinner…too bad I recognized the voice as they are trying to sell a water system…

Have had two different businesses wanting to know if I want to place an order this month…

Hello world… hubby has to have surgery next month…we can’t buy anything till we know what our co-pay will be.

There now I feel better.

Guess my tag today is not a nice one.

Daily Prompt: Garage Sale Memory

Daily Prompt: Memories For Sale

On a weekend road trip, far away from home, you stumble upon a garage sale in a neighborhood you’re passing through. Astonished, you find an object among the belongings for sale that you recognize. Tell us about it.

Photographers, share an image that says MEMORY.

Rather than reach under a cupboard

Rather than reach under a cupboard

Instead of painting

On the top of the cabinets

If you look high upon the top of our kitchen cabinets, you will see a lot of various pottery pieces that we came across on a road trip.
They brought back memories from when I was growing up and were similar to pieces that my grandmother had.
That is the only spot in the house that our cat does not try to claim them.  He has became better now that he owns his own boxes.
Memories are special as they usually bring back a happy time in life.  Those are the ones that we recreate.

The pot rack was another memory that I had from the old farm house and I loved it.
When we had the opportunity to purchase it, I was so excited to not have to bend as much to cook.

What are your memory finds that you have come across while traveling?
Would love to hear.

Are You Kidding Me?

Some of the companies out there with the telemarketing techniques are just too much.

Congratulations!  You have won a free Walmart Gift card for $100.00 if you give us your credit card information we will send it to you for $3.75.
Do they really think people are that stupid to hand over their information over the phone for something like this?
Are they seriously hard of hearing when you tell them NO…I do not want it…I will not give you my information…Do NOT Call…

This guy this morning acted like he was amazed that I was saying NO.  He would not stop.  I ended up hanging up on him only because I was too kind and would not put my hubby on the phone for one of his regular routines.
I do realize that they get paid only with commission and have to be pushy.  That is not my problem.  Is this the same type of person who goes on a date and the word No does not mean No to them?

I am so glad that we are on a do not call list.  So much good for that stupid list.

I feel the urge to actually say at times Are you F@@@ing kidding Me?  If you love me so much and I have won it then you know where I live, just send it.

The problem with that is that then you are on the phone for another 15 minutes as they explain why they need to do the processing and handling charges.

Process this people…If I wanted the product, I would have bought it by now.  If it is free, it always comes with a catch.  If it is that good then just send it to me.

There, I feel better now.

Daily Prompt: Going List-Y

Daily Prompt: The Satisfaction of a List

Who doesn’t love a list? So write one! Top five slices of pizza in your town, ten reasons disco will never die, the three secrets to happiness — go silly or go deep, just go list-y.

lists

Why do we make lists?  What type of lists do we make?  Are they to keep us organized, help us to remember or just something to doodle when in a meeting?

I decided to explore the different types of lists that people make.  Here are my findings.

The Ever Famous Summer Bucket List…(Kids are out of school for break, have limited time to get it done in short time)

bucket list

Then I began to think about what do we use list for besides…

wine list on menu

Menus in Restaurants

top ten spices eating right listReading articles

schedule

Making Appointments

party guest list

Having a party or wedding

notebook lists

Taking notes or inventory

cleaning list

Cleaning Lists

wish

Hmmm

store joke

grocery

We make this so we do not impulse shop

do it

Ah the Honey Do List…

list

Now it is time for me to make my list like the prompt said…

I need to decide which list to start with first…
Perhaps I need a list for my lists
Should they all be neatly lined on the fridge?
Do I line them up by importance?
What deems the list more important?
My fridge has a Honey Do and Grocery…
Both are forgotten by hubby…
If I could eat in a corn free restaurant, I would love a menu
I don’t drink, so I do not need a wine list.
I am a little old to start a bucket list
Today is day off from A-Z Challenge
Tomorrow I do the Letter M
That really is a list of sorts, yet broken down by day
It does not feel like a list that is in a list.
I guess you could easily say that my lists have lists.

Daily Prompt: Organizations I Chose To Be Beneficiaries

Daily Prompt: Charitable

You’ve inherited $5 million, with instructions that you must give it all away — but you can choose any organizations you like to be the beneficiaries. Where does the money go?

th

Wow with that amount of money it was a tough question.

1. Mike Fest 2013  (Would set it up so each year a recipient would receive a set amount).  This year is Wounded Warrior Sgt. Keith Hale.

https://layedbacklife.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/daily-prompt-mikefest-history-and-today/

2. Paws with a Cause Local Chapter Max’s Hope

https://layedbacklife.wordpress.com/2013/03/09/give-a-shout-out-to-our-local-organization/

The other charities I would have to think about for a bit and ponder.  My reason for this is that I have a problem with Administrative fees.  With these two that I have chosen, the money goes directly to the cause at hand for what is intended.

Perhaps if I just split between the two that would be enough to keep MikeFest and Max’s Hope going for years to come.

Daily Prompt: Ghostwriter

Daily Prompt: Ghostwriter

by michelle w. on March 11, 2013

If you could have any author –living or dead – write your biography, who would you choose?

I am not so sure that I would even want my biography written.  Perhaps James Patterson could give my life some exciting twists and turns along the way that would make my life story worth reading. Then my life would have a lot of danger, love, romance, excitement and all the other elements that he throws into each of his novels.

My second choice would have been Erma Bombeck who would have made my life a realistic look with a funny twist.  I love reading any of her writings.

Between the two my life would come out quite interesting and life would not seem dull and inhabitable.

Thank You for Reading.  Now I ask you as my reader, who would you hire as your Author?

Homemade Dryer Sheets

I have heard so much about these and so many people are using the Tupperware containers to store them in that we can’t keep them in stock.  They are using the container with a neat lift out center to keep the liquid in the bottom for reuse.  I found a blog on another site with another great way to recycle flannel shirts and make them.

Homemade Dryer Sheets // Clean Living

I’ve heard from multiple friends how I should start creating my own laundry detergent (which trust me, it’s coming in the near future of clean living), but I hadn’t heard of anyone creating their own dryer sheets, so I looked to my good ole pal, Google, for some tricks and tips. I came to find, much like a lot of clean living recipes, that it’s easy as pie. I was definitely skeptical with the main ingredient being vinegar (cause we all know that’s a lovely smell..), but I was so happy with the result. Here’s how it’s done:
Supplies:
 Flannel fabric
1/2 cup vinegar
15 drops essential oil
Combine the vinegar and essential oil (I used lavender) into a small bowl and mix well. Next, cut the flannel into small 5×5 inch squares. Soak each square in the liquid mix, and lay them out to dry on an old towel. Once they have dried, store them in a sealed container. The vinegar smell will be strong at first, but once it’s gone through the dryer cycle the harsh odor will disappear and leave a fresh, clean scent. What I love about this is how soft the lavender scent is, not overwhelming in the slightest. Plus, the flannel is recyclable, so you’re doing mother nature a favor, as well your wallet. Sometimes, we all win. I’m okay with that.

Sugary Substance Ban in NYC – What is Next?

bucket2

It is rare to find a can of soda pop in our home so this came as a surprise for me to read that a Mayor would take such a drastic step in his city to try and control the obesity.  There are very few of the diet soda’s that I can consume due to my corn allergy.  I do drink a ton of coffee, however when we go out to eat which is rare, a diet soda is what I will order if they do not have sweet tea.   Will coffee be next on the hit list?

Soft Drink Ban: New Yorkers Deeply Divided As Bloomberg's 16-Ounce Soda Ban Set To Take Effect

A little more than 50 percent of New Yorkers oppose the ban while 46 percent support it, according to a new poll released Thursday by Quinnipiac University.

Under the mayor’s plan, which goes into effect March 12, soft drinks larger than 16 ounces cannot be sold in restaurants, movie theaters and other places regulated by the city’s health department.

Bloomberg, a lame-duck mayor who is nearing the end of his third and final term, has unveiled initiatives aimed at making New Yorkers healthier throughout his tenure, including banning smoking indoors, doing away with trans fats and urging restaurants to cut back on salt. The mayor’s other health-conscious proposals have been warmly received.

While the mayor doesn’t have to worry about the next election, those vying to replace him would be wise to side against the soft drink ban, according to the poll.

The Quinnipiac survey found 29 percent of voters are less likely “to vote for a candidate who backs the drink ban,” while 21 percent said a candidate’s stance on the controversial policy won’t factor into their voting decision.

The survey found New Yorkers were divided as a whole, but Republican voters and black New Yorkers — two groups with generally very little overlap — largely oppose the ban. The poll showed 65 percent of registered Republicans don’t like the ban while 33 percent support it. A majority of Democrats – 52 percent – support the ban, compared to 46 percent who don’t.

While whites and Hispanics were roughly split on the ban, black New Yorkers are largely against the ban. Six in 10 blacks oppose the soft drink ban and 38 percent support it, according to the poll.

The survey also showed that Bloomberg’s job approval rating still hovers above 50 percent, although his popularity has dipped since taking office in 2002.

“Mayor Bloomberg maintains his pretty-good-for-a-third-term job approval,” said Quinnipiac poll spokesman Mickey Carroll.  “No more of those 70 percent numbers that were routine in his second term. But, as his tenure winds down, we still like him.”

The poll’s respondents were also asked whom they think did the best job as New York City mayor. Bloomberg ranked third at 24 percent. He was followed by late Mayor Ed Koch (25 percent) and Rudy Giuliani (31 percent.)

New York soda ban could be the end for children’s pizza parties and mixers for bottle service as Mayor mandates no soft drinks can be sold over 16oz

Next month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on sodas and sugary drinks larger than 16oz will kick in for all bars, restaurants, cafes and delis in the city.

The new law could have the unforeseen effect of killing pizza parties, children’s birthday parties and taking the fizz out of bottle service at high-class bars.

New Yorkers were furious to learn that the soda ban will prevent pizzerias from delivering 2-liter bottles of soda with pizzas – thus putting the kibosh on a time-honored family meal.

The New York Post points out that most pizza joints charge $3 for a two-liter. Six 12-oz cans – a roughly equivalent amount of soda – will cost $6 to $7.50.

‘It’s not fair. If you’re gonna tell me what to do, it’s no good,’ Steve DiMaggio, of Caruso’s in Brooklyn, told the newspaper. ‘It’s gonna cost a lot more.’

Representatives from city restaurants have been lobbying hard against the mayor’s new law and they say the ban on delivering 20 oz bottles with pizzas makes even less sense than the other provisions.

‘It’s ludicrous. It’s a sealed bottle of soda you can buy in the supermarket. Why can’t they deliver what you can get in the supermarket?’ Robert Bookman, a lawyer for the New York City Hospitality Alliance, asked.

It’s not just pizza parties that would take a hit. Bowling alleys and other spots that serve soda in pitchers to large groups of kids are also going to have to change their tactics.

The ban applies to sodas and surgery teas and juice drinks. Diet sodas and 100percent juice are exempt.

The mixers available for customers who buy bottle service at high-class night clubs will also be restricted.

Currently, unlimited amounts of soda, cranberry juice, tonic water and other popular mixers are offered for anyone who pays for a bottle of liquor at clubs across the city.

The law counts all of those a sugary drinks – they can only be served in 16oz bottles – even though they are meant to serve several people and not just one.

Bloomberg says too much soda consumption is resulting in obesity problems – especially for low-income New Yorkers and children.

The ban aims to reduce the amount of soda that New Yorkers consume.
