Daily Prompt: Walls the Second Time Around

Daily Prompt: Wall to Wall

What do you display on the walls of your home — photos, posters, artwork, nothing?
How do you choose what to display?
What mood are you trying to create?

I am not certain if it is due to my hubby and I being two households come together or if it is just that by the time you are starting over for the second time life is different.

We do not have the newlywed look in our home of blank walls.  We have the it was here and hers are added look.  Our Kitchen and Dining area are combined and are not very large.  They look country.  The decor is such that we are in the country and the kitchen matches.

The television room looks like something out of a hunting lodge.  Old fashioned popcorn poppers over a fireplace.  Wildlife pictures on the wall as well as the fish that hang on the wall.  It is the room that hubby spends a lot of time in and it makes him happy.  Happy hubby helps.

Our bedroom I just redecorated so it is probably the only modern room in the house.  A nice remake of Van Gogh’s Starry Night hangs so that is the last thing we see at night and first in the morning.
That room is simply decorated.  Just a few shelves with a plant on one and a few paintings that match the decor.

Our home is still a work in progress just as our marriage is.  Although we are older, we still are a work in progress and each room will some day express us.

What does your home say about you?  Would love to hear.

Daily Prompt: Something I know I should do yet will not

Daily Prompt: Shoulda Woulda Coulda

by michelle w. on February 13, 2013

Tell us about something you know you should do . . . but don’t.

My Kitchen needs a really bad make over.  The cabinets are solid wood so I would like to reuse them in the make over.  With all of the rain we have had and are having, it would be impossible to take them down and redo them outside.  I do not want the mess in the house to redo them in here.  Especially since right now I can’t open windows for ventilation.

To redo the position of the kitchen to give me more counter space would change the new flooring that we put in around the existing pattern.

Instead of painting

Lack of funding is my other issue.  After the tornado and storm damage, we have the roof fixed and the apple tree removed.  That is all of the repairs we have been able to do so far.

This project is on a back burner for a while and I am doing what I can with what I have.

What is going on with your life that you should be doing and will wait or will not be doing?

Would love to hear.

This is what some other Daily Prompt Word Press Writers had to say on the issue:

New Coffee Maker Purchase Ideas

For over a month now I have been trying to explain to my hubby that it was necessary for us to spend the money and just go get a new coffee maker.  The last one that we purchased was a Mr. Coffee and it has done nothing but leak all over my counter since day one. ***A safety hazard as it can leak into wiring…***

Without thinking…I filed the receipt and have no idea where to even start looking for it so that is totally useless as far as trying to get a refund.  Making other purchases at the same time was also a foolish mistake which did not happen this time.

Taking an hour to decide which coffee maker to purchase may seem extreme, however you have to remember that I took my hubby with me.  So the discussion of what we needed in a coffee maker and what we did not soon began.

We did not need a timer, auto start or a gold basket.  We did need a twelve to fourteen cup pot and filters not cones.  Hubby did not like the individual Keurig Cups as he did not feel that in the long run at the rate that we drink coffee they were cost effective.

(We purchase Maxwell House Blend of Wake Up Call) which is made for the military.

So price was not an issue as far as the maker went as much as the features and warranty that the actual maker offered.  We ended up with people stopping and watching the two of us carrying on our discussion of coffee makers as we lined them up on a display and discussed our likes and dislikes of each one till we narrowed it down to one that we both agreed upon.

The winner:  Kitchen Aid Model KCM111 12 cup Glass Carafe Coffee Maker.

We did not go to Kohl’s and saved

We not only saved $20.00 from what Kohl’s wanted but we also saved on what the tax would have been for going there vs where we got it and if we had gotten online what shipping and handling would have been lol.  It pays to shop around.

By shopping for just this item and keeping receipt separate and with manual I know when it was purchased and where.  I also know how long the warranty is good for.

Shop smart and buy for long term…it is more cost effective in the long run…

Additional Tips

I told you I lay awake nights…and that my hubby is afraid to walk in the morning cause I no longer lay in bed lol…

Vintage Medium Lid Holders

By hanging these on the side with bread tie wraps it enables me to move them the next time that I decide to roll this entire rack somewhere else… this mount is great cause it is not in the way of anything and holds all of the smaller lids.

Towel Holders

By making a few of the towels so they stay in place as a decoration and changing out the two towels on the ends daily I have fresh towels in hand to wipe my hands while cooking that are safe from flames yet close enough for use while necessary and neat at all times.

Calendar and Items Clipped

Our stainless steel fridge does not allow to use magnets on front so a calendar with a paperclip for shopping list and the points from Betty Crocker for the grand children’s school in the envelope that I seal just before a visit and place in my over night bag is a great way to save everything right at hand where I need it…as I run out of items I log it on my grocery list.  As an appointment comes up the pen that is attached to the calendar allows me to jot it as I am doing something else…

Power Strip

By simply attaching this strip to the back side of the rack, which actually turns out to be out of view from the front I simply pull it up and plug in an appliance in the front if needed in the work area there so the rest of the counters are still free and I can continue cooking….

Often Used Business Cards

On the side where no one normally looks is where I use my magnets with the business cards…yes in my office I have a file of them…I ask for two business cards for a business we use often actually more cause we place a stack in our store for customers and put one on our bulletin board that I made….

I hope that these tips helped and I hope that you will also share with me some of the tips that you have done on a shoe string budget as well…

Thank you as always for viewing my blog….

Easy Fix to A Dull & Drab Kitchen

One of my sleepless nights which sadly do happen often I got the bright idea to add some color to my kitchen…the inexpensive way…

I went on the road to garage and yard sales with the mission of finding the cheapest wallpaper or contact paper that I could find….

my results are as follows…adding a bit of cheap molding and a few photos from our local Goodwill helped me finish my task along with a few items to allow me to hang my cooking utensils, cups & pot holders…Cost…50 cents for contact paper, $3.00 for accessories from Goodwill, $1.00 for potholders from Dollar General and $5.00 for molding from Home Depot.
