About PTSD

http://comfortablynumb7.wordpress.com/more-about-ptsd/

English: signs and symptoms ptsdEnglish: signs and symptoms ptsd (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

PTSD: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events.

The type of events that can cause PTSD include:
military combat
serious road accidents
terrorist attacks
natural disasters, such as severe floods, earthquakes or tsunamis
being held hostage
witnessing violent deaths
violent personal assaults, such as sexual assault, mugging or robbery

PTSD can develop immediately after someone experiences a disturbing event or it can occur weeks, months or even years later. It can develop in any situation where a person feels extreme fear, horror or helplessness. However, it doesn’t usually develop after situations that are simply upsetting, such as divorce, job loss or failing exams.

Signs & Symptoms of PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be difficult to diagnose because people who experience traumatic events often don’t want to talk about their feelings. Also, people with PTSD may not seek treatment for many months or years after their symptoms appear.

The symptoms of PTSD usually develop during the first month after a person witnesses a traumatic event. However, in a minority of cases (less than 15%), there may be a delay of months or even years before symptoms start to appear. Some people experience long periods when their symptoms are less noticeable. This is known as symptom remission. These periods are often followed by an increase in symptoms. Other people with PTSD have severe symptoms that are constant.

Someone with PTSD will often relive the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, and they may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt. They may also have problems sleeping, such as insomnia, and find concentrating difficult. These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have asignificant impact on the person’s day-to-day life

Up to 30% of people who witness a traumatic event then go on to experience some of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms can vary widely between individuals.
Re-experiencing- Re-experiencing is the most typical symptom of PTSD: A person will involuntarily and vividly relive the traumatic event in the form of flashbacks, nightmares or repetitive and distressing images or sensations. Being reminded of the traumatic event can evoke distressing memories and cause considerable anguish.

Avoidance: Trying to avoid being reminded of the traumatic event is another key symptom of PTSD. Reminders can take the form of people, situations or circumstances that resemble or are associated with the event. Many people with PTSD will try to push memories of the event out of their mind. They do not like thinking or talking about the event in detail. Some people repeatedly ask themselves questions that prevent them from coming to terms with the event. For example, they may wonder why the event happened to them and whether it could have been prevented.

Hyperarousal (feeling ‘on edge’): Someone with PTSD may be very anxious and find it difficult to relax. They may be constantly aware of threats and easily startled. This state of mind is known as hyperarousal. Irritability, angry outbursts, sleeping problems and difficulty concentrating are also common.

Emotional numbing: Some people with PTSD deal with their feelings by trying not to feel anything at all. This is known as emotional numbing. They may feel detached or isolated from others, or guilty. Someone with PTSD can often seem deep in thought and withdrawn. They may also give up pursuing the activities that they used to enjoy.

Other possible signs & symptoms of PTSD include:
depression, anxiety and phobias
drug misuse or alcohol misuse
sweating, shaking, headaches, dizziness, chest pains and stomach upsets
having vivid memories, flashbacks or nightmares about the event
trying to avoid things that remind you of the event
sometimes feeling emotionally numb
often feeling irritable and anxious for no apparent reason
eating more than usual, or drinking alcohol or using drugs more than usual
an inability to control your mood
finding it increasingly difficult to get on with others
having to keep yourself very busy to cope
feeling depressed or exhausted

PTSD sometimes leads to the breakdown of relationships and causes work-related problems.
Treating PTSD
PTSD can be successfully treated, even when it develops many years after a traumatic event.
Any treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and how soon they occur after the traumatic event. The following treatment options may be recommended:
watchful waiting: waiting to see whether the symptoms improve or get worse without treatment
psychological treatment: such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EDMR)
medication: such as paroxetine or mirtazapine

***For the record my husband has not been officially diagnosed with PTSD but with the many signs and symptoms he is showing (in bold italics) along with an abusive past, we (him, our initial counsellor and myself) feel that this what he is going through and the route we are exploring with deeper therapy at this time***

I have discovered there is also a link between PTSD and addiction – drink/drugs/gambling/porn etc, 2 of which are relevant to my husband.

Related Articles

This is real and a part of just about every Veteran who has served in a few tours overseas.  The problem is that the medication only treats part of the problem.  The remainder of the problem is still there and still very real.  It is something that each Veteran lives with and their families every day.

May this bring some attention to the problem and possibly help to stop cutting the benefits that they deserve to get the help they need.

Sugary Substance Ban in NYC – What is Next?

bucket2

It is rare to find a can of soda pop in our home so this came as a surprise for me to read that a Mayor would take such a drastic step in his city to try and control the obesity.  There are very few of the diet soda’s that I can consume due to my corn allergy.  I do drink a ton of coffee, however when we go out to eat which is rare, a diet soda is what I will order if they do not have sweet tea.   Will coffee be next on the hit list?

As New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on soft drinks larger than 16 ounces gets set to take effect later this month, Gotham residents are deeply divided over the controversial initiative.

Soft Drink Ban: New Yorkers Deeply Divided As Bloomberg's 16-Ounce Soda Ban Set To Take Effect

Photo: ReutersAs New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on soft drinks larger than 16 ounces is set to take effect later this month, Gotham residents are deeply divided over the controversial initiative.

A little more than 50 percent of New Yorkers oppose the ban while 46 percent support it, according to a new poll released Thursday by Quinnipiac University.

Under the mayor’s plan, which goes into effect March 12, soft drinks larger than 16 ounces cannot be sold in restaurants, movie theaters and other places regulated by the city’s health department.

Bloomberg, a lame-duck mayor who is nearing the end of his third and final term, has unveiled initiatives aimed at making New Yorkers healthier throughout his tenure, including banning smoking indoors, doing away with trans fats and urging restaurants to cut back on salt. The mayor’s other health-conscious proposals have been warmly received.

While the mayor doesn’t have to worry about the next election, those vying to replace him would be wise to side against the soft drink ban, according to the poll.

The Quinnipiac survey found 29 percent of voters are less likely “to vote for a candidate who backs the drink ban,” while 21 percent said a candidate’s stance on the controversial policy won’t factor into their voting decision.

The survey found New Yorkers were divided as a whole, but Republican voters and black New Yorkers — two groups with generally very little overlap — largely oppose the ban. The poll showed 65 percent of registered Republicans don’t like the ban while 33 percent support it. A majority of Democrats – 52 percent – support the ban, compared to 46 percent who don’t.

While whites and Hispanics were roughly split on the ban, black New Yorkers are largely against the ban. Six in 10 blacks oppose the soft drink ban and 38 percent support it, according to the poll.

The survey also showed that Bloomberg’s job approval rating still hovers above 50 percent, although his popularity has dipped since taking office in 2002.

“Mayor Bloomberg maintains his pretty-good-for-a-third-term job approval,” said Quinnipiac poll spokesman Mickey Carroll.  “No more of those 70 percent numbers that were routine in his second term. But, as his tenure winds down, we still like him.”

The poll’s respondents were also asked whom they think did the best job as New York City mayor. Bloomberg ranked third at 24 percent. He was followed by late Mayor Ed Koch (25 percent) and Rudy Giuliani (31 percent.)

New York soda ban could be the end for children’s pizza parties and mixers for bottle service as Mayor mandates no soft drinks can be sold over 16oz

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

PUBLISHED: 16:57 EST, 24 February 2013 | UPDATED: 17:55 EST, 24 February 2013
Next month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on sodas and sugary drinks larger than 16oz will kick in for all bars, restaurants, cafes and delis in the city.

The new law could have the unforeseen effect of killing pizza parties, children’s birthday parties and taking the fizz out of bottle service at high-class bars.

Family tradition: Pizzerias will be barred from delivering 2liter bottles of soda to families who order pizzasFamily tradition: Pizzerias will be barred from delivering 2liter bottles of soda to families who order pizzas

New Yorkers were furious to learn that the soda ban will prevent pizzerias from delivering 2-liter bottles of soda with pizzas – thus putting the kibosh on a time-honored family meal.

The New York Post points out that most pizza joints charge $3 for a two-liter. Six 12-oz cans – a roughly equivalent amount of soda – will cost $6 to $7.50.

‘It’s not fair. If you’re gonna tell me what to do, it’s no good,’ Steve DiMaggio, of Caruso’s in Brooklyn, told the newspaper. ‘It’s gonna cost a lot more.’

Representatives from city restaurants have been lobbying hard against the mayor’s new law and they say the ban on delivering 20 oz bottles with pizzas makes even less sense than the other provisions.

‘It’s ludicrous. It’s a sealed bottle of soda you can buy in the supermarket. Why can’t they deliver what you can get in the supermarket?’ Robert Bookman, a lawyer for the New York City Hospitality Alliance, asked.

Fun without the fizz: A 2liter bottle of soda costs $3 at most pizza joints - the same amount of soda in 12oz cans will cost $6 to $7.50Fun without the fizz: A 2liter bottle of soda costs $3 at most pizza joints – the same amount of soda in 12oz cans will cost $6 to $7.50

It’s not just pizza parties that would take a hit. Bowling alleys and other spots that serve soda in pitchers to large groups of kids are also going to have to change their tactics.

The ban applies to sodas and surgery teas and juice drinks. Diet sodas and 100percent juice are exempt.

The mixers available for customers who buy bottle service at high-class night clubs will also be restricted.

Currently, unlimited amounts of soda, cranberry juice, tonic water and other popular mixers are offered for anyone who pays for a bottle of liquor at clubs across the city.

The law counts all of those a sugary drinks – they can only be served in 16oz bottles – even though they are meant to serve several people and not just one.

Bloomberg says too much soda consumption is resulting in obesity problems – especially for low-income New Yorkers and children.

The ban aims to reduce the amount of soda that New Yorkers consume.

Daily Prompt: What would I reinvent?

Daily Prompt: Undo

by michelle w. on February 21, 2013

If you could un-invent something, what would it be? Discuss why, potential repercussions, or a possible alternative.

Foods and medications with corn syrup additives , corn starch or modified food starch.  I would use the corn to produce gasoline.  The alternatives to corn in foods would be rice or potato starch or syrup.  There would be fewer allergies in the world and gasoline would be cheaper to make and purchase.

Can't wait to try

Can’t wait to try

Nice option to baking

Nice option to baking

Potential repercussions the nations who produce the petroleum that we are purchasing from would hate us more than they do already.

cars

By relying on our own corn for fuel, we might get out of debt.  What would our Government have to fight over.  Oh I forgot, there is still the medical issues and the gun control of the thieves who steal guns then commit crimes.  That alone should be enough to keep them busy after they finish fighting over the minimum wage hike.

pouring rain

Will the trickle down theory affect our prices of production of goods and the shipping of the goods to stores?  Will the increase in that minimum wage be eaten away by the increases seen in the cost of living?

ups truck

Perhaps if we went back to the barter system for a lot of things that we need in life things would become easier and more cost effective.

Food for thought.  What are your thoughts on this?  What would you reinvent?
