Daily Prompt: Wake Up Call

Daily Prompt: Dulled

You encounter a mysterious man offering you a magic potion that, once sipped, will make one of your senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch) super sharp — but dull the others. Will you sip it, and if so, what sense do you choose?

As the original was written, I decided to go with a fictional story to intrigue the senses.

Shelly was a young girl by some standards, yet old by others.  She had lived a unique life, most would never know.  She was a loner, a stranger to even those who knew her.  When she met Jake, she had felt like she had drank a magical potion.  She felt alive again.  She felt a part of herself that she did not even know had existed.  She awake in the morning and was excited to start each new day.  She could hardly wait to see what new adventures they were going to explore.

The senses that had awakened in her were ones that are deeper than the basic five.  She suddenly had felt alive again.  She was feeling emotions that she had not encountered in many years of her life.  Emotions of joy, happiness, laughter, a feeling in the heart where there had been a void.  With these feelings, she had also found a dark side of Jake.  It was a side that she was not sure of and not certain how to cope with.  Jake liked to drink a lot of vodka.

They were well into the marriage before the secret began to unfold and come to light.  She was now faced with a dilemma.  What would she do.  Would she stay and hope for just the happy days to try and stay as much as they could.  Were there going to become less and less of the happy days as the dark side took over his life?  She did not believe in divorce.  She was so many miles away from home.  She could feel the sadness slowly creeping into her veins like a poison lurking in the night.  Slowly pouncing upon each shred of happiness that she had found that had brought her back to a happy place and had made her feel alive again.

She had tried to talk to Jake about the dark side to only get the answer “I know” each time.  When she would ask if he was going to get help or wanted to try to make a go of it.

She was at a crossroad in her life.  At a place that she did not like.  She had to make a decision.  She had to do something or be sucked into the black hole of  despair that she had walked into once before to become a walking zombie.  Just an existence.  Not able to feel emotions, not able to express any feeling or compassion.  Feeling totally numb about life.  She could feel herself slowly slipping back there again.

Jake had the ability to make her laugh.  When he was not preoccupied and was not drinking, he could make her so happy by just making her laugh.  There had been a time when they watched tv and cuddled.  How she had longed for that now.  How he used to want to dance while she was cooking and he would sweep her off her feet, just for a brief few minutes, as they would dance closely then she would carry on with dinner. They always danced to the same song that he sang in her ear or played on the stereo.

She had come to resent Smirnoff Red Top and felt as if it were a “Red Head” that he was cheating on her with.  In a way, she was right.  It had cheated her of a perfect marriage.  It had cheated her of a life of love and happiness.  It had stripped away the joy and had brought tears and sadness in it’s place.  It had stripped away the sexual desires that had once been there.  They came with less and less frequency as well.

She had felt as if she were living in a huge balloon that had a small pin prick in it and the air was slowly being seeped from it.  She felt no desire to be with another man.  It was certainly nothing like that.  She truly loved Jake with all her heart.  The decision to stay and suffocate or leave and breathe was what she had to sleep on.  When she was to awake she would have her answer.  She would pray about it for a week and each night she would try to cleanse her mind of all thoughts of the day as to not tarnish her decision.

The week was over, as she made preparations to get ready for bed she knew her decision would come that next morning with an answer from God.  She again prayed and as she layed down to go to sleep, she again felt that same calm and peacefulness that she had not felt for a while.  She felt as if she had again drank from that bottle of magic potion.
