Daily Prompt: Burning Down the House

Your home is on fire. Grab five items (assume all people and animals are safe). What did you grab?

It could perhaps be our age, which has given us plenty of time to think about something like this or is it our location?  We are very susceptible to tornadoes in an instant with very little warning.

Being prepared ahead for those keeps my purse packed with our vital information that sits right near my door in my office.  Our medications that are mandatory are in a basket and can be moved in a moments notice.

Our important files are in a waterproof, fire proof file cabinet.  The other items in our home are material items and can be replaced.  Even clothing from the local Goodwill would supply us with clothes for our backs.

Since the people are safe and the animals are safe, I am still pondering what the other three things are and if there would be time to actually get them.  Would they really be worth risking my life to get?

What was your thoughts on this?  Leave me a comment and let me know… what should I have grabbed?  What was precious and what was necessary to survive for the next day was already with us.

I should also add that the back of our truck is packed for an overnight at a vendor show at all times with spare clothing, warm blankets, cots, a cooler of water and a cooler of snacks (including my hubby’s franks and beans cans).  There is silverware, cups, tables, chairs, sleeping bags, etc.

A bible?  I can walk down the road and purchase from the local church that I can see from my front door.  That also becomes a material item since God is already with me and in my heart.

  1. If you are out in terrible weather, you would probably need some warm clothing, even if it is only for a few hours. Hopefully, you never need to use this list!

  2. Thanks for the pingback. Seems like you’ve done a great job of being prepared!

    • I think that it had to do with my 2 hour commutes one way in Upstate New York where the snow was up to my waist. I never knew when a road was going to close in front of me due to snow drifts. Packing a supply of medications ready for the car and all the essentials became a must have including the water supply, at least a half tank of gas at all times and snacks for a few day wait for a snow plow to find me.

  3. With Tennessee weather, I now feel like I am on vacation year round…despite the tornado warnings.

  4. Hmmm….I’m not sure. It seems like you’re ready for almost any kind of catastrophe.

  6. You have obviously given this a lot of thought. You already have your most important things handy and packed. However, I had to decide on the spot what I would save and wrote everything as I thought of it. Please check out my blog http://jewelammons.wordpress.com/ for my list. I’m just hoping I would have enough time to rescue all of those things!

  7. I guess living in an area (Maryland, outside DC) that is relatively free from natural disasters, I don’t appreciate that some people have actually had to think and prepare about a situation like this.

If I actually had to leave quickly, I’d probably be at a loss.

  13. I might be more practical than most:
    1. Fire extinguisher
    2. Hose
    3. Phone – to call 911
    4. Laptop – to save all the digital photos
    5. My purse

All of our photo negatives are in the fire proof gun safe, and although it would be sad to lose family heirlooms in the fire, they are just things. As long as I have my husband, my children and our beloved pets, I have everything I need.
